SPECTACULAR

Systematic Process for the Equitable Customization of Technology Applied to Contexts and Users for Learning and Adapting Rapidly

A method for empirically customizing clinical decision support to nurses and the clinical contexts they work in.

Problem

Information to help nurses with clinical decision-making is readily available, but it is rarely presented in a way that fits their cognitive and physical workflows. Existing methods to design or redesign these tools are slow and resource-intensive, and they don’t ensure the best design is chosen.

Approach

SPECTACULAR combines a factorial research design with a Bayesian adaptive trial. Together they make it possible to evaluate many design options for a decision support tool rapidly and empirically, with respect to both nurses’ preferences and their performance.
